An 8-year-old Japanese girl is believed to have only days to live unless she finds a suitable donor to replace her failing heart.

Miyuki Monobe, of Shinagawa, Japan, came with her parents to the United States because her country's strict laws make transplants virtually impossible there. She was in critical condition Monday at the UCLA Medical Center.

"It's a very high-risk time," said Dr. Juan Alejos, pediatric cardiologist. "She's getting pretty near maximum medical support."
