A man who raped a 62-year-old woman and then beat her to death with a frying pan has been executed by injection.

Billy Joe Woods, 50, who was sixth in seniority among the state's 456 condemned inmates, received a lethal injection Monday evening for the 1975 killing of Mabel Ehatt.While the average time on death row before execution in Texas is nine years, Woods, with nearly 20 years and nine months on death row, becomes the longest-serving Texas inmate to be put to death.
