Barry Norris Ingham -- our adored husband, father, "papa", and friend -- died suddenly of a heart attack on Wednesday, April 23, 1997, at the age of 58.

Known affectionately as "The Bear" to his family and many friends, his warmth, enthusiasm, and passion for living were evident in everything he did, and enriched those he knew and loved from all walks of life.Barry was a loving husband and life's most wonderful partner to Marian Virginia Watkins Ingham, whom he married on July 26, 1962. He was a devoted, fun-loving father, mentor, and friend to his son and daughters, Scott Walter, Laurel, and Heather Brooke, and to his daughter-in-law, Heidi. He was a beloved "papa" to his grandchildren, Hailey and Ryan, and to his dog, Chauncey.

He was born on April 9, 1939, in Monroe, Utah, and adopted by loving parents, Norris S. and Benita Sims Ingham. Following his mother's death, he was just three years old, he was raised by his father and sister, Carol. Educated in Salt Lake City, he graduated from South High School in 1957 and received his B.S. degree in economics from the University of Utah in 1962. He received his CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter) certification in 1968, and went on to a successful career in the insurance industry. He was currently vice president of AON Risk Services.

Barry shared his time, talents, and financial resources generously throughout the community, serving in many leadership and volunteer roles. He chaired the Salt Lake Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, and served on the boards of directors of the United Way of Salt Lake City and the American Cancer Society of Utah. He was a trustee of Ballet West, a member of the Alta Club Board, and a past president of the Salt Lake Country Club. As an alumnus of the University of Utah, Barry was an avid Ute fan and contributed countless hours of enthusiastic service to his alma mater. He was a former chair of the U's President's Club, was a founding member of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts Special Exhibition Council, and served on the Alumni Association Board. He was currently chair of the College of Social and Behavioral Science Advisory Board and a member of the University Hospital Foundation Board, the Crimson Club, and the President's Club.

Barry's talents were endless! He was a sports enthusiast, avid fly fisherman, skier, and consummate golfer who made a hole-in-one at The Country Club; a talented artist whose needlepoint earned him a Utah State Fair Home Arts Sweepstakes Prize; and a gourmet in the kitchen with Uppy's Fine French Chefs. He loved liver and onions, Rocky Road and Rum Raisin Ice Cream, ginger snaps, orange marmalade, bran muffins, Alta Club rice pudding, and cinnamon bears!

In addition to his immediate family, Barry is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Phil Zimmerman, St. George, Utah, his stepmother, Myrtle Ingham, and his stepsisters, Mrs. Robert C. (Pat) Bland and Mrs. Lionel (Joan) Drage.

Funeral services will be held to "remember the sweetness of life" at noon on Monday, April 28, at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City where the family will greet friends on Sunday from 5-7 p.m. and on Monday from 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
