It's now official: Utah is a two area code state.

The North American Numbering Plan approved 435 as the state's second area code. Five counties will retain the 801 area code: Utah, Salt Lake, Davis, Weber and Morgan. The rest of the state will begin a six-month phase-in of the 435 code on Sept. 21. During that period, callers can use either 435 or 801 to reach residents and businesses in the area.

After March 22, 1998, only the 435 area code will work.

The new code is needed because new telephone services, pagers, fax machines and cellular telephones are overwhelming Utah's current 801 area code. At the present growth rate, the existing area code would have reached capacity next January, which would block assignment of new prefixes - the first three digits in a telephone number.
