In the ever changing fast-paced world of Utah high school track, it takes something truly unique to stand alone.
Set a new state record? Better hurry and celebrate because it could be gone by the time your name gets in the record book.Won a state title? Big deal. Panguitch girls have won four straight, Mountain View girls have won three in a row and six times in the last seven years.
In the boys' competition, Pine View, Box Elder and Panguitch have all won back-to-back titles.
When the high school state track meet opens Friday at 7:30 a.m. with the mile run at BYU, Mountain View will looking to do something that's never been done before - to win a boys and girls 5A title in the same year.
The Lady Bruins have yet to be threatened in a meet this year, but the boys could face a strong challenge.
"I think Orem, us and Fremont are the teams to beat," said Mountain View coach Dave Houle.
The 4A boys' competition should also be close. Woods Cross and Ben Lomond have emerged as the favorites, but Wildcats coach Marvin Magalei believes it's a six-team race.
"It could be Timpview, Provo, Box Elder, Ben Lomond, East or us," he said.
Magalei is counting on a big day in the 110 hurdles where Lonny Winegar is one of four Wildcats to qualify. Winegar has run a 14.22, just missing the state record of 14.21.
Wood Cross also needs a good showing in the high jump.
"We've got three guys who can jump 6-4 or better in Bryan Kattleman, Jeff Waterhouse and Kevin Galbreath. We need a good day from all three and have to hope the other teams split up the distance points."
Spanish Fork has the inside track on the race for the 4A girls title. Box Elder coach Shane Quilling doesn't see anyone catching the Dons. "I can seem them winning by 20 or 30 points."
Spanish Fork coach Chris Caviness figures the meet will be determined by how the Dons fare in events like the shot put, where the Iketau sisters (Tia, Melinda and Melissa) have all qualified in the shot put. Jamie Barney (long jump) and Miriam Glenn (hurdles) are also keys for the Dons.
Delta looks like a strong candidate to keep Pine View from a three-peat in the 3A boys' race. Delta hasn't lost a 3A invitational this year.
The Rabbits are paced by Jeremy Stohl, the 3A state recorder holder in the 400 and hurdler Fifita Reeves, but Delta coach Shane Rowley doesn't think much of his team's domination.
"All that proves is we were good then. They (Pine View) don't have the same team as they did earlier in the year. They have everyone healthy and they're so deep."
The Delta girls are the defending 3A champs, but Cedar City has emerged as the favorite. Pine View and Uintah should also challenge.
The 2A girls race looks like it will come down to North Sevier and Millard. Millard's Joann Stevens holds the state record in the 200 and 400. She will also run in the 100 and help Millard's 4X100 relay team.
Kellie Child should also help Millard's chances. She's cleared 5-71/2 in the high jump and has a shot at winning the long jump and 300.
Morgan looks like the team to beat in the boys 2A and Panguitch could repeat in both the boys and girls 1A titles.
