A man was shot to death and a teenager wounded in a Sugar House alley Saturday night in what police said may have been a drug deal gone bad.
Arthur Sanchez, 21, address unknown, was found dead in the passenger seat of a car parked at 773 E. Ashton Ave. (2335 South) about 11:30 p.m. He had been shot in the head.Salt Lake Police Lt. Arthur Healey said the second victim, 15, managed to reach a nearby house and summon help from the residents. Raymond and Nancy Andersen said they were getting ready for bed when they heard someone banging on their front window.
Thinking it was their 18-year-old son, Raymond Andersen opened the front door.
"I said, `Stop pounding on the window,' and he said, `I've been shot,' " Andersen said. "He had blood all over him."
Carlos Chavez was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound in the face.
About 12 Salt Lake police officers and five members of the department's gang unit responded to the scene. Healey said investigators are looking into the possibility that the two victims and two other men were involved in a drug deal in the dark alley when a dispute erupted.
Other reports by police, however, indicated that an argument over a girl may have led to the shootings.
On Sunday, detectives arrested two men in connection with the shooting. Davey Williams, 19, and Christopher Tolton, 21, were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping.
Residents who live in houses surrounding the alley said they didn't see or hear anything unusual Saturday night.
"I didn't hear anything. My brother, who has ears like an eagle, didn't hear anything, and my dog didn't wake up," said Robert Christopulos, who has lived in the neighborhood for 26 years. "It's incredible that at least one of us didn't hear something."
Another nearby resident said he didn't hear anything either but indicated that his wife had heard what she thought were gunshots.
Raymond Andersen has lived in the home next to the alley for 21 years and said it has never been a problem.
