Henry Peter Backer, age 83, died peacefully the morning of May 4, 1997 of causes incident to age. He died at Mayfield Manor in Mayfield, Utah.
Henry was born July 24, 1914 in Dornum, Ostfrieisland, Germany to Gerhard Meint and Henriette Gerhardine Doelle Backer. At the age of 10, Henry, his parents, two brothers and a sister immigrated to the United States. He began grade school in Germany and upon settling in Salt Lake City attended LaFayette Elementary, Horace Mann Junior High and West High School. Upon graduation from the American Institute of Baking in Chicago, Illinois, Henry worked for his brother at Mrs. Backer's Pastry Shop. Due to mounting health problems, Henry eventually left the baking business and soon became a resident of Mayfield Manor where he has lived for many years.The family would like to thank the staff and doctors of Mayfield Manor for their years of care and kindness.
Henry is survived by his younger brother, Martin August Backer and his wife, Phoebe; two nieces and seven nephews. Preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Reinhard H. Backer and his sister, Gerda Backer Schierioth.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 7, 1997 at 2 p.m. in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Avenue and "N" Street. Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple Wednesday 1 to 1:45 p.m.
