The operation raises 90,000 chickens each year for their feathers, which are used by fly-fishing experts around the world. The feathers - groomed for texture and even color - are used as flies, which are called hackles by anglers. These chickens have long lives, at least by normal standards. Most last about a year before they are killed and their bodies are ground up for use as compost. In comparison, most chickens raised for food last for six to 16 weeks.
