A Scoutmaster was killed by lightning while hiking with his troop toward King's Peak Friday afternoon.

Killed was:Douglas A. McLachlan, 52, Bountiful.

At least two other individuals - adult leader Ryan Deakin and his son Trevor, 12, also of Bountiful - were injured during the lightning strike.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Bountiful resident Nedra Lewis called Summit County Sheriff's Office with information about the lightning strike, said deputy Alan Siddoway.

Lewis told the Deseret News her son, Morgan Lewis, 16, had been hiking near King's Peak with two other Scouts and two adult leaders when they came across another group of Scouts.

The second group of Scouts told Morgan Lewis and his group that one of their adult leaders had been killed by lightning. The group wrapped the body in a red raincoat and left it near Henry's Fork Lake. Then they decided to look for help.

Morgan Lewis called his mother from a cellular phone, and she contacted the sheriff's department.

Search and rescue crews tried to fly a helicopter to retrieve the deceased, but were unable to do so due to mechanical difficulties, Siddoway said.

An AirMed helicopter was also called to retrieve the injured, who were taken to University Hospital. The Deakins were in stable condition late Friday.

Authorities plan to retrieve McLachlan's body Saturday morning.
