Scholarship
Salt Lake School District
A West High junior has been awarded a scholarship for her ideas on how to change the world.
Christine Chow was this year's Utah recipient of the EF Ambassador Scholarship - her ticket to an all-expenses-paid, 11-day educational tour of England, Belgium, France and Switzerland. This month, she travels with scholarship recipients from across the nation and Canada.
In her scholarship application, Chow suggested creating a student-written political newsletter, where issues of interest and influence could be discussed, in attempts to reduce political apathy.
Students grades 9-12 can apply for the annual scholarship, in which one student is selected from each state or province.
Library
Salt Lake City schools
Newman Elementary School's library will be named after veteran principal Mary S. Hancey, the Salt Lake City Board of Education approved Tuesday.
The name reflects accomplishments under Hancey's 11-year tenure, including a library/media center addition to the school, school staff and community council reported.
Hancey became principal at Rosslyn Heights Elementary this year. The library will be dedicated in August.
Landscaping

Hillside Intermediate School soon will see a hillside full of trees, shrubs and flowers.
Some 200 local youths and adults are expected to plant about 25,000 square feet of hillside Saturday.
For the past month, students, teachers and residents have cleared the area of weeds and prepared for a new sprinkling system as part of a service learning project.
The project is one of many under the Salt Lake City School District's character education program.
Materials for the beautification project were secured through grants and business donations.
Internet
Davis School District
Utah high school students will be able to better conduct research on the Internet, thanks to a donation from Mountain America Credit Union.
The business has donated computers and printers to each of Davis District's nine high schools and is making similar donations elsewhere.
"We are pleased to accept this generous donation," said Davis associate superintendent Lynn Trenbeath. "Students need more Internet access for research."
The computers will default to the Mountain America Web page dedicated to student use.
