Autopsy tests showed suspected serial killer Andrew Cunanan was not infected with the AIDS virus when he took his life after three months on the run, The Miami Herald reported Friday.

Cunanan, 27, was not infected with HIV, the paper said, citing three unidentified law enforcement sources. The revelation about the tests, conducted last week by the Dade County Medical Examiner's Office, undermines speculation that Cunanan, who was gay, was motivated to kill by his belief that he was HIV-positive.

Cunanan was suspected in the July 15 shooting death of fashion designer Gianni Versace and four killings since April 29 in Minnesota, Illinois and New Jersey. With a nationwide manhunt intensifying, he shot himself in the face with a .40-caliber handgun on July 23 in an unoccupied houseboat in Miami Beach, 2 1/2 miles from Versace's oceanfront mansion.
