Robert (Bob) E. Sherlin II passed away Wednesday, July 30, 1997 due to injuries received in an automobile accident July 24, in West Valley City, Utah.
The same accident caused the death of his wife, Helene Sherlin, who died July 24, and was buried July 29. The were married April 12, 1958 in Fort Wayne, Indiana and were residents of the Salt Lake City area for the past eleven years. Bob was born June 13, 1933 in Catasaque, Pennsylvania and served his country in the Korean War.He is survived by three children, Rob Sherlin, his wife Peg; Carol Pillard, her husband, Wayne; and Bill Sherlin; Papa Bob will be sorely missed by his three grandchildren, Sara and Michael Sherlin, and Benjamin Pillard. He is survived by two sisters, Ruth and Ed Godfrey and Nancy and Len Hilbert, and many loving nieces and nephews.
We are all very saddened by this loss, but are grateful to God for the time we had to say good-bye. We honor our father with his many accomplishments. Bob's Engineering career included such diverse achievements as managing the development of the electronic data gathering equipment on the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander and for the first GPS satellite. He continued his pioneering work in the development of the floppy and hard disk drive and the optical disk drive. While working at Datapoint in San Antonio, Texas, he managed the engineering of the first desk top computer and the first networked desk tops. Bob's achievements include two patents, one developed for Burroughs and another for General Electric. Bob always maintained a sense of professionalism, was respected by his peers, and in turn, he respected the many people that worked for him. He was a compassionate man who loved to tell stories, and had a gift for telling them. From Michigan to Florida, from Los Angeles to Texas, form China to California, and finally to Utah, he formed lifelong friends as his creative accomplishments grew. Our family was blessed with his continued love, stories and the jokes that were shared many times. Bob and Helene were always there for their family, for each birth, for soccer and basketball games, for each family celebration and provided a listening ear to one and all.
We wish to thank all the wonderful people for their help during this tragic time. To the staff at University Hospital's SICU Unit, Sally, Monica, Shirley, and Steve, thanks for your love, and all the wonderful care and support you provided.
