William W. Tingey, age 88, passed away at his home on August 27, 1997.
He was born March 10, 1909 in Centerville, Utah to Wesley E. and Mae Ann Croft Tingey. In early childhood he was raised by his grandparents, Alzina and Thomas Tingey after the death of his mother when he was 8 months old. At age 14, he lived with his father and second mother, Ivy Tingey. He attended schools in Centerville, Bountiful, Davis High, and Utah State University in Logan, Utah.He served a two year mission in Australia. He married Sylvia Carr on June 6, 1932 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He served in the church as a bishop, member of a bishopric and High Council, and stake Sunday School president. During these years he was called to head a committee for a Young Men's banquet which was very successful and became a highlight in the lives of many young men.
Bill was a successful farmer all his life and has taught his family the joys of working with trees, plants, animals and working with other people. He hauled produce to the Salt Lake Growers Market from his farm and for many part-times growers in Davis County. Hundreds of young men and women worked for him. He first took produce to Welfare Square in 1937 and continued faithfully until Thanksgiving 1996.
He was president of Deuel Creek Irrigation Company for 28 years and served as a member of the Centerville City Council. His love and service extended to friends and neighbors in the community. He taught his family the values of work. He rejoiced in the church service of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His greatest desire is that all remain faithful in the Gospel.
He is survived by his wife; children, Elder Earl C. (Joanne Wells) Tingey, Bountiful; Don C. (Judith Williams) Tingey, Las Vegas, NV; Sherman N. (Kathleen Anderson) Tingey, Tempe, AZ; Nola (Noel F. Hatch), Yorba Linda, CA; Merlyn (Chalo de la Melena), Salt Lake City; Alice (R Dale Earl), Calgary, Alberta; Douglas W. (Renee Egnew) Tingey, Rio Vista, CA; Loraine (Thomas L. Nelson), Lacey, WA; Mavis Nelson, Salt Lake City; 56 grandchildren; 116 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters; Emma Byrne, Simi Valley, CA; Warren Tingey, Bountiful; Dale Tingey, Provo; Olive Nilsen, Salt Lake City; Calvin Tingey, Centerville; Shirleen Nelsen, Salt Lake City; Conway Tingey, Centerville. He was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Brent R (Vicki Gardner) Tingey, his parents; brothers and sisters; Virginia T. Rollins, Beth Guiver, Wesley Tingey, Ralph Tingey, Franklin Tingey and Byron Tingey.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 30, 1997 at 12 noon at the Centerville Stake Center, 270 North 300 East. Friends may call Friday evening from 6- 8 p.m. at the Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main and again Saturay morning from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment-Centerville City Cemetery.
