Utah Valley State College, in partnership with the Public Broadcasting System and KBYU, has taken steps to ease the stress of juggling a career, a family and school.

For the first time, the college will offer a distance-learning degree through a partnership called "Going the Distance" beginning fall semester of this year.Students may complete general studies core requirements for an associate of science or an associate of art degree in their home through a variety of media courses, including television and Internet courses. Television courses will be shown on a variety of channels including Channel 3, 9, 11, 40 and 41. Many of these courses are already available; however, they, along with newly developed courses, will now be incorporated into an established degree.

"This is an excellent opportunity for traditional and nontraditional students to complete the majority of their degree without having to come on campus," said Roger Porter, director of concurrent en-roll-ment/off-campus centers.

Courses are produced by either the college or PBS, and each PBS course will include a UVSC wrap-around that will update students on assignments and reading materials. Several distance-learning courses will be offered each semester.

Students interested in the distance-learning degree should apply to UVSC and follow the registration procedures in the fall class schedule. Academic advisement will ensure that students declare the proper degree. Financial aid is also available. Students will be charged a $38 distance-learning fee per class; however, they will not be charged on-campus fees for those classes.
