One man was killed and another seriously injured after the sports car in which they were riding hit a diesel truck pulling a trailer and caught fire Saturday night. The truck driver was also injured.Killed was:
Chris Hadlock, 35, Lehi.
Hadlock was driving the car, a red Ferrari, southbound on Highland Drive near 14500 South about 8 p.m., when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and crossed into the northbound lanes, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Dan Jensen.
The car was rounding a corner going at least 80 mph in a 35 mph zone when it began to spin, said deputy sheriff Larry Stratford. While spinning, the car clipped the front of the northbound truck owned by R.C. Willey, then hit the driver-side wheels of the cab and then the rear wheels.
According to witnesses, the car burst into flames on impact, Stratford said. The engine, fender, hood and other parts were spread over a 50-foot radius of the South Mountain residential area.
One car in the area was hit and damaged by the falling debris, but the driver was uninjured. Homes were not threatened by the fire.
Police don't know if Hadlock and passenger Cully Davis, 41, Draper, were wearing seat belts, but both were ejected from the vehicle, Stratford said. Davis was able to crawl to a sidewalk and was taken to University Hospital where he remained in serious but stable condition Monday morning.
Paramedics transported Hadlock by helicopter to LDS Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the truck sustained minor back injuries. Damage to the truck was estimated at about $20,000.
After the blaze, only a torn-apart black frame of the Ferrari remained.
Tamara Davis lives about four blocks from the site and came upon the crash just after it happened. The car was still on fire.
"It was unbelievable. There were flames and sparks shooting out of the car," she said.
Police do not believe alcohol played a factor in the accident. An autopsy of the driver is pending.
