The African elephant Protea is hoisted from a 9-foot-deep dry moat Tuesday at the city zoo in Santiago, Chile. An ardent bull elephant named Jumbo, 10 years old, pushed his would-be mate into the moat while pursuing her. Keepers used a crane to lift the three-ton elephant out while others held the frustrated Jumbo at bay with an electrified wire and lots of carrots. Protea, 9, a gift from South Africa to Chile, walked away from her mishap unharmed except for some minor head injuries.
