Wilford M. Hess, professor of botany and range science at Brigham Young University, received the 1997 Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award - the university's top faculty honor - from President Merrill J. Bateman during the recent University Conference.

Hess will deliver an address on Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. in the Wilkinson Center Ballroom. The public is invited to attend.Other award recipients included Elizabeth M. Weston, botany and range science, the Fred A. Schwendiman Performance Award, and Ronald Woods, humanities, the Ben E. Lewis Management Award. These two awards represent the top awards given to staff and administrative employees at the university.

Neal E. Lambert, English, received the Abraham O. Smoot Citizenship Award.

Karl G. Maeser Excellence in Teaching Awards went to Shauna C. Anderson, microbiology; Ross L. Spencer, physics and astronomy; and Laurie J. Wilson, communications.

Recipients of the Karl G. Maeser Excellence in Research and Creative Arts were W. Steve Albrecht, school of accountancy and information services; Tony R. Martinez, computer science; and Richard Rowley, chemical engineering.

The Wesley P. Lloyd Award for Distinction in Graduate Education was given to Earlene Durrant, physical education.

The Alumni Professorship Award went to Brent W. Webb, mechanical engineering, while the Phi Kappa Phi Award was presented to A. Garth Fisher, physical education.

Named Young Scholars at the conference were Stanley E. Fawcett, business management, and Irene Weiss Perry, music.

The annual Sigma Xi Lecture, the university's top science honor, will be given by Eric H. Christiansen, geology, on March 19, 1998, at 8:30 p.m. in the Tanner Auditorium of the Bean Museum.

1997 Alcuin Fellows are David D. Allred, physics and astronomy; Steven Bule, visual arts; Michael J. Call, humanities, classics and comparative literature; Rex G. Cates, botany and range science; C. Wilfred Griggs, ancient scripture; John D. Lamb, chemistry and biochemistry; and Steven C. Walker, English.

Karl G. Maeser General Education Professorships were awarded to Gary L. Browning, Germanic and Slavic languages, and Larry L. St. Clair, botany and range science.

A special posthumous recognition award was presented in the memory of the late Roland K. Robins, chemistry, for his humanitarian efforts and contributions to the university.

The Sponsored Research Achievement Award went to Larry L. St. Clair, botany and range science, and the annual Technology Transfer Awards were given to Jerry W. Larsen and Kim L. Smith of the Humanities Research Center.
