Rex A. Skidmore, longtime dean of the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Utah, died Saturday, Jan. 10. He was 83.

Mr. Skidmore graduated from the U. in 1938 and received a master's degree one year later. He completed his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania in 1941.Dr. Skidmore began his 40-year tenure at the University of Utah in 1945 as a professor. He served as dean for 20 years, developing a doctoral program, creating a program for American Indian social workers and raising money for a new social work building. He wrote 27 books and 77 articles.

He was reared in Brigham City and served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England.

He married Knell Spencer in 1939.

In addition to his work at the U., Dr. Skidmore was a board member of the Boy Scouts of America, president of the Utah State Conference on Social Welfare and president of Traveler's Aid.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the Monument Park 3rd Ward, 2215 E. Roosevelt Ave. (1460 South).

Friends may visit Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Russon Brothers Mortuary, 255 S. 200 East, or at the church from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.
