MOODY DIES AT 92: Helen Wills Moody, the hard-hitting, poker-faced tennis great who won eight Wimbledon singles titles during the 1920s and '30s, has died at 92.

Moody, who died Thursday at Carmel Convalescent Hospital, was a premier figure in America's golden era of sports, sharing newspaper headlines with the likes of Babe Ruth, Red Grange, Jack Dempsey and Bobby Jones.

She won 31 major titles, including seven U.S. championships and four French titles.

Basketball

IDAHO ST.'S MEADOWS SUSPENDED: Tywan Meadows, Idaho State's leading scorer and rebounder, has been suspended indefinitely by the school. Meadows was arrested in Idaho Falls on Dec. 20 and charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Football

OSU DB GOING PRO: Versatile Oklahoma State defensive back R.W. McQuarters is giving up his final year of eligibility to enter the NFL draft. McQuarters, a two-way starter for the Cowboys, played more than 100 snaps during OSU's 33-20 loss to Purdue in the Alamo Bowl on Tuesday night.

Olympic trials

BIATHLON TEAM: Kara Salmela beat the field for a second time, giving her the overall lead Friday and a good shot at winning a spot on the U.S. Olympic biathlon team in big day for Minnesotans.

Meanwhile, Andy Erickson won Friday's 20 km race, but Dan Westover retained a slim lead in the overall competition for a berth on the Olympic team.

Salmela of Elk River, Minn., won the women's first 15 km race Monday, then did the same thing in Friday's event to give her a commanding lead heading into Saturday's fourth and final day of competition.

WORLD JUNIORS: At Helsinki, Finland, Team USA defeated dethroned champion Canada 3-0 Friday at the World Junior Hockey Championships and earned the right to play Sweden for fifth place. Sweden downed Kazakstan 5-1.

Skiing

WIBERG COULD MISS OLYMPICS: Pernilla Wiberg, the Swedish star who won the World Cup overall women's ski title last season, might miss the Winter Olympics because of two broken ribs. The fractures were revealed in X-rays taken Thursday, several days after Wiberg took a hard fall in a race at Lienz, Austria, the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reported Friday.
