Singer John Gary died of cancer Sunday. He was 65.
Gary performed with Ken Murray's "Blackouts" in Hollywood before he temporarily lost his voice. After returning from the Marines, he became a regular on "Don McNeill's Breakfast Club" in Chicago, a popular early morning network radio show that thrived in the pre-television era.After his first album, "Catch A Rising Star," was successful, Gary signed a contract with RCA Records.
He was a guest star on numerous television shows, including the "Tonight" Show and "The Ed Sullivan Show." He also was host of the syndicated "John Gary Show" for three years.
In 1991 a fund-raising event to raise money for his cancer treatments drew stars including Perry Como, Johnny Mathis, Liza Minnelli, Henry Mancini, Mel Torme, Red Buttons, Milton Berle and Ann-Margret.
