Those riding recreational vehicles need to remember to follow the newly established all-terrain vehicle route and abide by a new ordinance governing use of the route.
"The City Council went to a lot of time and effort to plan the ATV route because of people who wanted access to the foothills around Nephi," said Nephi Police Chief Chad Bowles. In the past, said Bowles, people who were not obeying the law and were riding their ATV inside city limits were stopped, warned and informed of the law. Warnings will no longer be issued.
"The council has asked us to enforce the new ordinance, so we will," Bowles said.
The new ordinance does not allow an ATV rider to take the vehicle along city streets to the grocery store and/or the gas station on the way out of town. ATV riders can only use city streets en route to an out-of-city location.
The speed for ATVs was set at 15 mph on city streets. All ATVs must be registered and display the appropriate decals.
In addition to having a valid motor vehicle license or appropriate safety certificate, all riders ages 8 through 15 must have an adult with them.
