Tax protester Rulon Frederick DeYoung has agreed to pay taxes and will be released from prison.
The former Granite School District bus driver opted last year for imprisonment rather than pay $2,800 in back taxes. A 3rd District jury convicted DeYoung of tax evasion, and Judge Anne Stirba promised lenience if he paid.DeYoung, 56, will have spent nearly 11 months in prison. His one-to-15-year sentence was terminated. This means he will be under no parole supervision, unlike most felons, according to the parole decision released Wednesday.
DeYoung is one of four Utah men who have been imprisoned in recent years for publicly refusing to pay state income tax. He was found guilty of 12 felony counts for dodging state income tax for 1990 through 1995. He also owes $21,000 in fines.
