I believe the public's view of President Clinton has become much clearer since Aug. 17, however opinions of him seem unchanged. Republicans feel like they have known all along the character flaws of the president. Most Democrats try to excuse or refuse to believe that the president's abuse of a 22-year-old intern is very serious, preferring to attack Linda Tripp or Ken Starr as messengers.
To divert attention away from him, the actions and motives of a legally authorized independent prosecutor are challenged by this president continually. Democrats, finding the president's behavior indefensible, take up the cry of partisan politics, instead of addressing the core issue. Why are there so many questionable events surrounding this president's administration and his previous administration as governor of Arkansas?I don't believe President Clinton lied merely to protect his family from the embarrassment of revealing the disgusting aspects of his personal sexual perversions. The greater motivation to commit perjury may have been the court imposed fines, if convicted and, more importantly, the potential loss of the public office he holds. I cannot imagine how the public could allow a president, if convicted of sexual harassment, to remain in office.
Mr. Clinton, you stand impeached in my eyes. You are transparent. Maybe you will survive this crisis and remain as president two years more years, but you are getting the exposure you richly deserve based on your conduct. If you were held to the standard of law the rest of us are, you would be impeached, convicted and sent back to Arkansas where you would face the justice of committing perjury in a civil deposition. If you are not held to the same standard of law, we have set the bar too low or your popularity and exalted office too high and share your shame.
