The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating complaints that several older model Lincoln Town Cars caught fire while the cars were parked and the engines were not running.
The agency said Monday in a monthly report that it has received complaints of 21 fires on the driver's side area, 12 at the left front fender near the wheel and nine in the engine compartment. It is looking at Town Cars built by Ford Motor Co. for the 1992 and 1993 model years. More than 200,000 of them are on the road, NHTSA investigators estimate.
Five motorists complained of fire damage to their garage, carport or home, the report said.
Ford spokeswoman Karen Shaugh-nessy in Dearborn, Mich., said the company was cooperating with the investigation.
The agency also is investigating Ford Windstar minivans from 1995 and 1996 for rear axle failures that could cause drivers to lose control.
An estimated 500,000 of the minivans are on the road.
No injuries were reported in either of the Ford cases.
