NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: BYU claimed its third consecutive National Intramural Recreational Sports Association men's soccer championship Saturday with a 4-0 victory over Texas Tech in the finals.

Freshman Brandon LeRoy earned tournament most valuable player honors after scoring five goals in the club-sport competition. Goalkeeper John Morris joined defenders Nate Morris and Abe Millet on the all-tourney team.

The Cougars outscored the opposition 23-2 over six tournament games.

WRESTLING: Junior Tom Meacham was the top wrestler for BYU as the Cougars competed at the St. Louis Open this weekend. Meacham had a 3-2 record at the meet and was one victory away from placing in the top four. Finishing at 2-2 for the Cougars at the meet were Trent Rollins, Jose Enriques, Brandon Ruiz, Chris Miller and Chris West. Tyler Robertson, Matt Bradshaw, Scott Coleman, Aaron Holker and Dave Castle were all 1-2. Gary Sanderson and Craig Middledorf were 0-2.

This weekend, BYU will be at the Las Vegas Invitational.

CYCLING: Brigham Young University student Gene Hilton has been named 1998 rider of the year by Mountain Bike magazine.

Hilton, 22, the oldest of eight siblings in a St. George-area family, competes in cross-country races. Other mountain-biking events include dual slalom, downhill and trial races.

He's enjoyed a string of top finishes at cross-country races organized by the National Off-Road Bicycle Association.

Now Hilton is turning pro. Jamis Bicycles will pay him $20,000 and cover his racing expenses in six national races and an international event. The salary will help cover his expenses at BYU, where he is majoring in biology in preparation for dentistry school.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The BYU women's basketball team will be spending Thanksgiving in Eugene, Ore., as one of four teams invited to the Pepsi Shootout Championship hosted by the University of Oregon.

The 1-1 Cougars play the late game on the first day of the tournament. The consolation game is at 6 p.m. Saturday, followed by the championship game at 8 p.m.

MILLER 10TH: Junior Andy Miller finished tied for 10th at the 1998 Savane College All-America Golf Classic held in El Paso. Miller fired a 1-under par 212 for the tournament. The tournament included the 24 golfers voted All-America last year by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Miller is currently ranked 21st in the nation.

Utah State

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: For the second consecutive year, Utah State junior setter Lori Sargent was named Monday to the 1998 GTE/

CoSIDA District VIII Women's Volleyball Academic All-America Second Team.

Sargent, a native of Fruit Heights, Utah, has a 3.91 GPA while majoring in physical education. She led the Aggies this season with 1,255 assists along with recording 137 kills and 227 digs. Sargent helped lead the Aggies to an overall 8-22 mark in 1998.

Weber State

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Sixth-seeded Weber State will play third-seeded Montana State on Friday in the first round of the Big Sky volleyball tournament being hosted by regular-season champ Sacramento State. The Wildcats finished the season 13-16 overall and 8-8 in the Big Sky. If Weber State wins its first-round match, they will play second-seeded Eastern Washington on Friday at 5 p.m.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Weber State's women's basketball team travels to Atlanta, Ga., over the Thanksgiving Holiday to compete at the Georgia Tech Atlanta Marriott Northwest Classic. The tourney field includes Georgia Tech, Samford University and the U.S. Naval Academy.

Weber State plays Navy in the first round of the tournament, while Georgia Tech takes on Samford. Weber State is currently 0-3 on the season with road losses to Long Beach State, Iowa and Bradley.
