A portion of an exhibit at Sutter's Fort in Sacramento, Calif., is making visitors aware of the Mormon Battalion's role in the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill at Coloma, 42 miles to the east.
The Sutter's Fort Sesquicentennial Gold Rush exhibit, which runs through 2001, commemorates the beginnings of the California Gold Rush in 1848-1849 and includes a display dedicated to the story of the Mormon Battalion. The battalion display consists of tools typical to the period, photographs, copies of journals, a musket, and a copy of an oil painting of the Mormon Battalion by artist George M. Ottinger.Sutter's Fort is located at 2701 L Street in Sacramento. The fort can be reached by exiting Highway 80 on N Street and going to L Street and 28th, two blocks to the west.
