OREM -- Encore Performance Publishing owner Mike Terry has the script for success -- more than 500 of them.

Those scripts include: "The Big Bad Wolf and How He Got That Way," "Bush Rats in the Elephant Grass" and "Frozen Waffles on the Interstate" along with the familiar "Alice in Wonderland," "A Christmas Carol" and "Pinnocchio."And he'll rent them to community theater groups, high school, junior high and college drama departments, civic groups, even church groups who want to produce a clean, fun event for an audience.

"We are geared for family theater. That means there are no situations and there is no language that would be a problem for families attending any of our shows," Terry said. "And judging from our customers, that's what people want."

Encore Performance Publishing as a business is actually a one-man show, operating in Orem from a small storefront on State Street where Terry sells theatrical makeup and books as well as the scripts for shows.

Terry keeps the shop open from 3:30 to 6 p.m. weekdays and teaches drama at Spanish Fork High School during the day.

He also operates a Web site, www.encoreplay.com and handles contracts and sales from all over the country.

"We deal in all markets," he said. "It's a challenge sometimes to keep up with the workload because we typically have 15 to 20 productions going each month."

Terry not only supplies the scripts -- bought on commission after an author submits a piece that's been produced at least twice on stage -- but he tracks where the various shows go.

"You don't want the same show being produced by high schools that are fairly close to one another," he said.

He charges the fees and distributes the royalties, supplies books, compact discs and tapes for choirs and keeps track of all the details in between while keeping a current catalog available.

He is also constantly on the lookout for new family-friendly plays.

"Oh, yeah, we are always looking for new material," he said. "We have a pretty varied clientele and more interest in our inventory all the time."
