Last week: 2. Results: 2-0. Note: Defending champs continue to do nothing but impress. Jeff Gardner scored 45 points and Tim Henry added 38 in their wins.
3 - Bingham (7-0) Class: 5A
Last week: 3. Results: 3-0. Note: Miners beat teams from 3A (80-28 over Park City), from 4A (49-46 vs. Fremont) and from 5A (91-78 against Viewmont) during a busy week.
4 - Hillcrest (7-0) Class: 5A
Last week: 4. Results: 3-0. Note: After consecutive wins over Hunter, West Jordan and Taylorsville, the Huskies conclude their Region 2 schedule with a huge showdown vs. Bingham on Wednesday. They'll join Region 3 in 1999.
5 - Jordan (3-3) Class: 5A
Last week: 9. Results: 1-1. Note: The Beetdiggers' record isn't glossy, but they just about escaped Brighton's Jungle with a W. Jackson Brown averaged 21 points for the week.
6 - Timpanogos (4-1) Class: 5A
Last week: 6. Results: 0-1. Note: The Timberwolves played respectably in their 11-point loss to Mtn. View. Reserve Jeff Tuttle started and scored 20 points to lead Timp, which plays dangerous Pleasant Grove tonight.
7 - Mountain Crest (5-0) Class: 4A
Last week: 7. Results: 1-0. Note: The Mustangs hammered a tough Bear River squad in their only game last week. Corey Monson and Travis Baldwin combined for 36 points in the 74-48 win.
8 - Timpview (5-1) Class: 4A
Last week: 8. Results: 3-0. Note: Provo teams should play all their games in Hawaii. Not even Bill Walton's boy or his highly regarded University High team could slow down the Thunderbirds at the Iolani Classic.
9 - Viewmont (4-3) Class: 5A
Last week: 15. Results: 2-1. Note: After impressively eking out two wins over Alta and Skyline, the Vikings found the going much tougher against Bingham. The Vikes' three losses are to higher-ranked teams.
10 - Sky View (5-1) Class: 4A
Last week: 10. Results: 3-1. Note: The Bobcats had a nice week, but they suffered their first loss in the championship game of the Page Tournament.
11 - Cottonwood (5-2) Class: 5A
Last week: 11. Results: 2-0. Note: Guard Josh Neeley had a tremendous week, scoring an average of 21.5 points in wins over Taylorsville and Region 1 foe Davis. He saved the Colts' bacon with game-winning free throws vs. the Warriors.
12 - Skyline (5-3) Class: 5A
Last week: 5. Results: 0-2. Note: After a splendid start, the Eagles were knocked off their perch a bit with back-to-back loss to Viewmont in double overtime and to Granger Monday.
13 - Olympus (5-2) Class: 4A
Last week: 12. Results: 2-0. Note: Remember what the Titans did to their league in football? So far, their talented hoops team is cruising through opponents in similar style. Josh Steenblik scored 24 and 17 in their wins.
14 - Provo (4-3) Class: 4A
Last week: 13. Results: 2-0. Note: Bulldogs' juniors -- Schaeffer Jackson and Jake Chrisman -- continue to improve, and they're bringing the rest of the team up with 'em.
15 - Alta (5-3) Class: 5A
Last week: 19. Results: 1-1. Note: The Hawks lost a heartbreaker to Viewmont, but they bounced back to win when it counted -- in their Region 3 opener against Orem. Adam Knight, yup, there's another one, scored 33 points in the week.
16 - Springville (3-2) Class: 4A
Last week: 14. Results: 1-1. Note: Chad Jacobsen continued his personal assault on the bottom of the net as the Red Devils split a pair of Region 6 games. He scored 27 in the OT loss to American Fork, followed by a 32-point outing vs. Lone Peak.
17 - Clearfield (4-1) Class: 5A
Last week: 20. Results: 1-0. Note: The Falcons almost became the bad-luck Hunter Wolverines' first victim, but a timely 3-pointer and 29 points by Cliff Scholer helped them avoid that scenario.
18 - Orem (3-3) Class: 5A
Last week: 16. Results: 0-1. Note: The Tigers suffered a second-half meltdown in the Region 3 opening loss to Alta. They were outscored by 15 in the final two quarters.
19 - Bear River (5-2) Class: 3A
Last week: 17. Results: 2-1. Note: The Bears had their lunch eaten by the Mustangs (74-48), but they avenged the loss against a couple of other 4A teams -- 68-62 over Roy and 58-43 vs. Bonneville.
20 - Box Elder (3-2) Class: 4A
Last week: 18. Results: 0-1. Note: The Bees barely stayed in the Top 20 after falling to the surging Lehi Pioneers in overtime. They open region play on Dec. 30.
