Joseph "Papa" Bond, 92, of Salt Lake City, died December 28, 1998.
He was born May 25, 1906 in Salt Lake City to Anthony and Jovinni Marsola Bond.As a teenager, he was a featherweight boxer and continued as a professional, training with Jack Dempsey and Gene Fullmer. He married Frances Williams on July 18, 1949. Later divorced. He was employed for 32 years by Griffin Wheel Company and for 12 years by St. Regis Paper Company. He enjoyed dancing. He was known as the Candyman among the neighborhood kids.
He is survived by sons, Walter M. (Ruth) Bond of Sylacauga, Alabama; and Joe A. Bond of West Valley City; daughters, JoAnn (Jerry) Seybold and Rose (Jeff) Draper, both of Salt Lake City; three brothers, Tony Bond, Frank Bond and Jack Bond, all of Salt Lake City; longtime friend and dance companion, Mabel Adams; 14 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Tess, and brothers, Sam and Jim.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 715 West 300 North. A vigil service will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Neil O'Donnell and Sons Mortuary, 372 East 100 South, where friends may call from 6-7 p.m. Committal, Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 4th Avenue and T Street.
