A drug that blocks the male sex hormone testosterone appears to be highly effective in keeping child molesters under control.
The drug was tested in Israel on men with a history of pedophilia. It totally stopped their sexual fantasies and desires as well as their abnormal sexual behavior. The drug, called triptorelin, is made by the Swedish company Ferring Pharmaceuticals, which helped pay for the study. The results were published in Thursday's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
Triptorelin is not available in the United States, where sexual offenders are sometimes treated with Depo-Provera, a drug that also blocks testosterone.
