Utah Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Zimmerman, Senior Judge Raymond Uno and attorney Mary Jane Ciccarello received special recognition at the Utah State Bar's midyear meeting in St. George.
Zimmerman, who was appointed to the state's highest court in 1984, was presented the bar's Distinguished Service Award for the "thoughtful and conscientious manner in which he coordinated bar relations over his term as chief justice."He was also recognized for his "creativity, innovative ideas and resolve in positioning the judiciary for the 21st century." Zimmerman is stepping down as chief justice on April 1 but will continue to serve on the court. Justice Richard C. Howe will succeed him as chief.
Uno, a senior judge in the 3rd District in Salt Lake County, received the bar's award for Advancement of Minorities in the Law. The first president of the Utah Minority Law Association, Uno has been an advocate for advancement of minorities in the legal profession for more than 30 years.
Ciccarello received the bar's Distinguished Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year award for her volunteer work with the Office of the Guardian ad Litem, Domestic Violence Victims' Clinic and the Children's SSI Pro Bono Project. She is assistant dean for student affairs at the University of Utah College of Law and has worked in public interest practice with Utah Legal Service and Legal Aid Society of Utah.
