YOU ART WHAT YOU EAT
That's right, kids. Lettuce continue . . . it's time to get together and enter the 1998 National 5-A-Day Salad Head Competition. Honest.School groups can create the likeness of a man, woman, child or beast (real or imagined), cartoon character, historical figure or national celebrity, using at least 15 different fruits and vegetables. Seems like somebody is trying to sell more salad . . .

Last year's competition produced a masterpiece - "Church Going Lady Getting Bitten by Alien Scorpion and Bleeding from the Neck."
Yum.
FOLIC FACTS
This week's New England Journal of Medicine says: "The only sure way for most men and women to achieve the recommended intake of 400 micrograms of folic acid is to consume a multivitamin or a serving of fully fortified breakfast cereal."
Adequate folic acid in the diet has been shown to help reduce risk of certain birth defects and may also have important roles in reducing risk of heart disease and cancer.
Naturally, General Mills (Haley's father) sent us a thick press kit pointing out that its product, Total Cereal, is just what the doctor ordered.
They note that "The Definitive Guide to the Best and Worst of Everything" lists Total twice among the top ten healthiest foods, beating out broccoli, which is ranked at number 10.
Other top foods are turnip greens, raw chopped spinach, bok choy, cooked mustard greens and cooked beet greens.
Oy! Pass the Total!
WHAT'S THE MEANING OF THIS?
Mirepoix (mihr-PWAH)
A mixture of diced carrots, onions, celery and herbs sauteed in butter. Sometimes ham or bacon is added to the mix. Mirepoix is used to season sauces, soups and stews, as well as for a bed on which to braise foods, usually meats or fish.
