Fern Decker Ellis, 83 of Mancos, Colorado, passed away Sunday, April 26 in Cortez, CO.

She was born in Mancos, July 8, 1914, to Nathaniel Cornelius and Effie Hammond Decker. She graduated from Mancos High School, and two years later married her childhood sweetheart, Vernon C. Ellis, in the Mesa, Arizona LDS Temple.She is survived by three sons and one daughter, Darrel Eugene (Rovilla) Ellis, Mancos; Jede Neil (Betty), Salt Lake City; Ronald Carlyle (Karleen), Fredonia, Arizona; Effie Maurine (Russell) Smith, Salt Lake City. Also survived by a a sister, Pauline John, Kaysville; and a brother, Carlyle Decker, Mesa, Arizona; 13 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon C. Ellis, and a sister, Leah Decker.

She has always been active in church and community affairs and was a friend to everyone she met. She was an author of several books and was the leading historian for the Mancos Valley. Many lives have been enriched by her musical talents, leadership abilities, her teaching and her optimistic outlook on life.

Funeral services will be held at the Mancos LDS Church, Friday, May 1, at 4 p.m. Burial will be in the Weber Cemetery in Mancos.
