Darryl Lynn Hughley, a comedian who often appeared on HBO's "Def Comedy Jam" and will have his own ABC sitcom this fall, was arrested by airport police for having a loaded gun in his luggage.

Hughley, former host of BET's "Comicview," was arrested Friday at John F. Kennedy International Airport after a .38-caliber semiautomatic pistol was found in a suitcase as it passed through an X-ray scanner. The 35-year-old comedian told police he traveled with the gun for protection.

"He said he carries a lot of cash and had already been robbed once," Port Authority Police officer Eric Katz said. "He didn't know he's not allowed to possess it in New York."
