Laurel Kay Washburn Christiansen, 59, passed away May 23, 1998, in the Beaver Valley Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on April 26, 1939, in Richfield, Utah, to Tyrus Elmo and Miriam Kathyrn Madsen Washburn. She married John Orrock Christiansen on June 29, 1962, in the St. George LDS Temple.Laurel was a school teacher for 20 years. She taught in the high school arts department, was a librarian, and taught first, second and third grades in elementary school, with most of that time in the first grade.
She was a member of the LDS Church serving in numerous positions as well as serving as a stake missionary with her husband John. She helped to open the Dungeon of Arts in Beaver and loved arts of all kinds. She was a member of NEA, BEA and UEA. She enjoyed reading, having a garden, and all kinds of flowers.
She is survived by her husband, John of Beaver; children, Richard John (Gaye) of Spanish Fork; Brett David (Susan) of Ellicot City, MD; Von Joseph (Melynda), and Daryl Tyrus (Jennifer), all of Provo. She had numerous foster children, Debra Maize, Linda and Lita Neal; Marilyn, Pauline and Melissa Oshley; Sharlene Olds, Robyn Curtis, Yulonda McClelland; and Elston, Erland and Elroy Louis. She has seven grandchildren; brothers, Alan (Linda) Washburn of Riverdale, Dan (Bonnie) Washburn of Royal City, WA, and Robyn (Candy) Washburn of Batesville, IN; sisters, Janet Washburn of Royal City, WA; and Iris (Mike) McCubbins of Portland, OR; mother, Miriam Kathryn Madsen Washburn of Royal City, WA.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at 2 p.m. in the Beaver LDS 3rd Ward Chapel. Friends may pay their respects on Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the Olpin Mortuary and on Tuesday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery under the direction of Olpin Mortuary.
