Cassia Dorethea Young Vandersteen
Cassia Dorethea Young Vandersteen, 24, of Salt Lake City, Utah, died May 22, 1998 at Afton, Wyoming, in an automobile accident with her husband, Darin Dorrel Vandersteen.Cassia was the beloved and adored daughter of Robert Samuel Young and Sabra Evelyn Pierce Young of Excelsior Springs, Missouri.
She is survived by her parents; her sister, Sephora Tietjen Young Bruns and family of Kansas City, Missouri; her brother, Robert M. Young of Excelsior Springs, Missouri; and her sister, Ariel Asahel Young of Excelsior Springs, Missouri.
Cassia was born October 11, 1973 in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah. She lived in Salt Lake City, Utah from 1973-1976; Bountiful, Utah from 1977-1982; Independence, Missouri from 1982-1990; along the Wasatch Front from 1990-1993; Excelsior Springs, Missouri from 1993-1995; Santiago Dominican Republic from 1995-1996; Excelsior Springs, Missouri from 1996-1997; and Salt Lake City, Utah from 1997-1998. Cassia and Darin served in the Dominican Republic-Santiago Mission. They were married in the Manti Temple June 20, 1997. They were education majors at the University of Utah. Cassia worked as a secretary for the Environmental Division of American Stores for two years. She had also worked as the office manager for Counseling Services of Ray County. She graduated from Viewmont High School, Bountiful, Utah in May 1991.
Her fervent testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ was shared with everyone. She loved serving as a missionary, teaching children, Spanish music, expressing herself through art, hiking, running, serving in church responsibilities, plays, dramas and stagecraft. She was a member of the LeGrand Ward, Salt Lake City, Utah. Her fun-loving and spontaneous spirit will be missed.
Darin Dorrel Vandersteen
Our beloved son, brother, grandson and friend has been called home to our Heavenly Father. Darin Dorrel Vandersteen and his eternal companion, Cassia D. Young Vandersteen, were involved in a fatal auto accident in Afton, Wyoming, May 22, 1998. They were on their way to enjoy a weekend of camping at Yellowstone.
Born January 15, 1975 in Salt Lake City. Parents: Bill and Cynthia Breeze and Roger L. and Annette Vandersteen. Darin lived in Salt Lake City, Midway, Utah, Lexington, Kentucky and Brock, Nebraska. Graduated from Henry Clay High School, Lexington, Kentucky, where he excelled in wrestling and football.
He served an LDS mission in Santiago, Dominican Republic, where he met his future eternal companion, Cassia D. Young. Darin and Cassia were married June 20, 1997 in the Manti Temple. Darin was on the Dean's list at Peru State College in Nebraska and recently at the University of Utah. Employed by his father, Roger L. Vandersteen Construction, where he will be missed for his dependability and hard work.
Darin's strong conviction to the gospel of Jesus Christ at a very young age never wavered. He will always be remembered for his love of music and writing poetry. He enjoyed water-skiing, camping and hiking in the Wasatch Mountains.
Survived by parents; brother, Paul A. Vandersteen, currently serving in the Guayaquil Ecuador South LDS Mission; and many step brothers and sisters; grandparents, Dean and Donella Cruikshank, Brock, Nebraska; Martin Vandersteen, Afton Wellington, both of Salt Lake City; and Reva Petersen, Provo. Preceded in death by grandparents, Leona L. Vandersteen, Robert Wellington, and George and Bernice Gundry of Salt Lake City.
Heather Esther Young
Heather Esther Young, 20, of Salt Lake City, Utah, died May 23, 1998 at Columbia Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Idaho Falls, Idaho, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Heather was the beloved and adored daughter of Robert Samuel Young and Sabra Evelyn Pierce Young of Excelsior Springs, Missouri.
She is survived by her parents; her sister, Sephora Tietjen Young Bruns and family of Kansas City, Missouri; her brother, Robert M. Young; and sister, Ariel Asahel Young of Excelsior Springs, Missouri.
Heather was born August 26, 1977 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. She lived in Bountiful, Utah from 1977-1982; Independence, Missouri from 1982-1990; Bountiful, Utah from 1990-1992; Excelsior Springs, Missouri from 1992-1997; and Salt Lake City, Utah from 1997-1998. Heather graduated from Excelsior Springs High School, Excelsior Springs, Missouri in May 1996. She attended and worked for the University of Utah and was working for and attending LDS Business College in Salt Lake City, Utah, to obtain an Associate Degree in Medical Records. Heather was a life long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was preparing to serve a full time mission. She enjoyed performing baptisms weekly at the temple, serving in church responsibilities, laughing with family and friends, listening to music and picking wildflowers on road trips. Her laughter and contagious smile will be missed.
Joint funeral services for Cassia, Darin and Heather will be held at noon on Thursday, May 28, in the Granite Fifth Ward, 2535 East Newcastle Drive (9010 South), Sandy, Utah. Friends and family may call from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive and at the Ward Thursday from 10-11:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment for Darin and Cassia, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Interment for Heather in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
