The annual Weedstock festival was quieter than usual, with attendance, complaints and arrests down from last year.

The four-day event, which ended Monday, drew about 1,300 people who each paid $35 to hear local bands and speakers who advocated legalizing marijuana. Police arrested 27 people for marijuana possession, 43 for minor traffic violations and five others for outstanding warrants.Last year, about 2,500 attended and there were 42 drug arrests. In 1996, attendance was about 3,000 and there were 111 drug arrests.

"What was going on mostly was people were arrested for small amounts of marijuana," Sauk County Sheriff's Department dispatcher Paul Negast said. "We haven't had any calls or complaints from the area."
