An experienced diver has been found dead inside the hulking Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria, one of New England's most famous shipwrecks.
Dive teams discovered the body of Richard Roost, 46, of Ann Arbor, Mich., a day after he disappeared in the wreckage. He was found in the ship's first-class bar and lounge area, 213 feet below the surface, said Coast Guard Lt. Craig Jaramillo.The cause of death was unclear and an autopsy was scheduled. It did not appear that Roost had been trapped on the boat, and Jaramillo said investigators would be examining his oxygen tank.
The Andrea Doria was headed from Genoa, Italy, to New York when it collided with a Swedish boat on a foggy night nearly 42 years ago, killing 51 people and coming to rest at the bottom of the Atlantic about 50 miles southeast of Nantucket.
Roost had wanted for some time to conquer the shipwreck, said Mike Graczyk, general manager of the Divers Inc. store in Novi, Mich.
"That's the dive that he wanted to do," Graczyk said.
