Lenore Romney, the widow of former Michigan Gov. George Romney and a Utah native, died Tuesday. She was 89.
Lenore Romney, a one-time Republican U.S. Senate candidate, suffered a stroke last Thursday at her Bloomfield Hills home and had been in critical condition since then at William Beaumont Hospital.The day she was stricken would have been her 67th wedding anniversary, said family spokeswoman Marcie Brogan.
Born Lenore Lafount in Logan, Utah, on Nov. 9, 1908, she graduated from George Washington University in 1929, then studied at the American Laboratory School of Theater in New York.
She and fellow Utah resident George Romney wed in 1931. They were married for 64 years until Romney's death at the age of 88 in 1995. The Romneys raised two daughters and two sons.
"For 64 years, George and Lenore Romney were the perfect couple - in love and full of love for their family," Gov. John Engler and his wife, Michelle, said in a joint statement. "Their example inspires us and teaches us that nothing is more important, nothing is more enduring, than family and faith."
