Southern Utah University has made a $4.6 million down payment on more than 16 acres adjacent to its campus, where a new physical education building will be constructed.

The land, owned by the Iron County School District, will cost a total of $8 million. The rest will raised from private donations.The parcel will increase the Cedar City university's acreage by 14 percent. Cedar City Middle School and a swimming pool are currently located on the land.

Plans are for the middle-school students to move into Canyon View High School in Cedar City. Canyon View students will move into a new high school that is close to groundbreaking, Robinson said.

SUU officials hope to occupy the property by fall of 2000.

"We are grateful for the teamwork and the wonderful cooperation from the school board," said SUU President Steven D. Bennion in a prepared statement. "We now have the ability to accommodate some of the physical demands that our growing enrollment is creating."
