A man convicted of killing a convenience store clerk who ignored his demand to open a cash register wrote a letter apologizing to the clerk and his family before he was executed.

Lance Chandler, 25, refused to make a final statement before his execution by injection Thursday.Chandler was sentenced to die for killing William Dix, 33, on Feb. 7, 1993, while robbing a small store near South Boston in Halifax County.

Chandler released a one-page letter apologizing to the victim and his family. "I greet this moment with joy and peace and understanding human nature's need for revenge," the letter said.
