The Rev. Jesse Jackson and family members gathered around Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill., and his wife, Sandi, in Salt Lake City on Sunday after the death of their pre-term baby.
Sandi Jackson, 34, was admitted to University Hospital Thursday evening due to complications from her pregnancy. She and her husband were in Utah attending a conference on youth leadership in Deer Valley.A statement released by the hospital at the request of Rev. Jackson said the baby boy was delivered Saturday evening and died a short time later. He was four months premature.
Sandi Jackson was listed in good condition but will remain in Utah for several days while recuperating.
The Rev. Jackson and sons Jonathan and Yusef flew to Salt Lake City to be with the couple. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, joined the family in a prayer circle led by the Rev. Jackson, according to the statement.
Rep. Jackson's pastor, the Rev. James Meeks of Salem Baptist Church in Chicago, also flew to Salt Lake City and was with the couple at the time of the baby's birth.
The Jackson family thanked the doctors, nurses and other members of the health-care team at the University Hospital for their "professionalism and compassion during this difficult time."
