Ernest Manford Smith left on his final "CRUZ" August 22, 1998, at his home in West Jordan, Utah.

Ernie was born in Salt Lake City on March 14, 1943, to Ernest Gilmore and Patricia Amala Coffin Smith. He married his bride of 28 years, Marilyn "Joie" Brown on July 17, 1970; later solemnized in the Jordan River LDS Temple.Their marriage was blessed with two special sons, Ernest "Michael" and Eric Matthew. Next to his family, his passions included cooking, fishing, traveling, painting Ukrainian Eggs, genealogy research, restored cars, and "Cruz Nites."

He graduated from South High School in 1962, and was proud to be a "CUB." Served six years in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged July 4, 1968. Attended LDS Business College, Stevens Henegar Business College, and graduated in 1974 from the U of U with a degree in Business Marketing and Management.

Enjoyed his volunteer work with West Jordan City, serving on the Budget Advisory Committee and the city's Development Master Plan Board. Member of the American Legion, Original Jesters Car Club, Rocky Mountain Auto Association, CMA and KKOA.

Ernie was an elder in the West Jordan 66th Ward, having served in the Sunday School Presidency, Primary teacher, and Young Single Adult leader. Due to illness, he took an early retirement from the law firm of Jones, Waldo, Holbrook and McDonough.

Survived by his bride, Joie; sons, Michael and Eric, all of West Jordan; Dennis Luckau, of Kaysville; mother, Pat Kinney, Boise, ID; mother-in-law, Ellen Brown, Taylorsville; aunt, Tybe Ferebauer, Boise, ID. Preceded in death by his father; daughter, Shauna Lee Smith; sister, Lonnie Montgomery; and grandparents, John and Edith Adair, who took the time and opportunity to raise Ernie from early childhood.

At Ernie's request, graveside service will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Valley View Memorial Park, 4100 South 4400 West. Friends may call Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and again Wednesday, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
