The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints plans to build a temple in the Spokane Valley to serve 75,000 church members living in Eastern Washington and northern Idaho.

"This is a very big deal," said Steve Holdaway, president of the church's Spokane East Stake. "Rumors have been rampant for weeks."Local church members have had to drive five hours to Bellevue, near Seattle, to participate in temple ceremonies.

"We don't want people to have to travel great distances to get to a temple," said Don Lefevre, spokesman for the church. "We want people to be able to get there regularly."

The building will contain about 8,000 square feet, built on property already owned by the church, Holdaway said.
