19-year-old student killed by experimental explosive

A visiting college student was killed in an explosion during an unauthorized experiment that went wrong, police said.

The visitor, David A. Rosefield, and a student from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology made an explosive device that detonated Sunday in woods near a Rose-Hulman dormitory, police said.Rosefield, 19, a student at California Institute of Technology from Chapel Hill, N.C., later died from his injuries at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, police said.
