On January 1, 1999, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher and friend passed away due to complications of a blood disease.
He attended university under the GI Bill. He had four children by the time he earned his BA from the University of Buffalo. He went on to earn his MA from the University of Buffalo and his Ph.D. from Brentwood Forest, England. Al Munzert served in the US Navy during World War II and was attached to the US Marine Corp during his service. He served as a medic in California and the Pacific. He was a high school teacher and university instructor, Public Relations Director of D'Youville College in Buffalo, traveled over Europe, North Africa and the Middle East as a training consultant, was attached to the State Department and served in the Soviet Union as a Cutural Liaison, served as Liaison for Educational Testing Service and the Hong Kong Testing Authority to open testing in Hong Kong.
Dr. Munzert was an accomplished author of numerous self-help books, including "The National Directory of External Degree Programs" and the popular "Self-scoring IQ Test". His book, "Poor Richards Survival Manual" was serialized by Pat Roberts and the Christian Broadcasting Network in 1984. He authored articles and self tests in many national publications, including "Glamour Magazine".
In 1984, Dr. Munzert came to Utah at the invitation of the Utah State Board of Regents and founded Hawthorne University. As Chancellor of the University, he started Hawthorne Academy in 1986. He infected all who met him with his compassion and love of learning. His unquenchable quest for knowledge inspired all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
Dr. Munzert is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elaine Anthony Munzert, West Jordan, UT; children: Karen Elskamp Lamoreaux (Rick), SLC, UT; Kristie Newell (Dale), Buffalo, NY; Kim Munzert (Elizabeth Klinowski), Machias, NY; Kyle Munzert, Franklinville, NY, Kraig Munzert (Mary Greico), Midvale, UT; Kent Munzert (Yoko Suzuki), West Jordan, UT; Karlin Munzert (Kathy Massa), Seattle, WA; grandchildren: Eric Fuller (Jill), Paula and Diane Newell, Christopher Lamoreaux, Erik, Robert, Brenna Elskamp, LisaJohn, Stephanie, Nicholas, Angela, Julia, Anthony, Mark, Adam, David, Sarah, Brandon, Daniel Munzert; brothers, David Munzert (JoAnn Bryant), Edinboro, PA; Michael Spencer (Christina), Arlington, VA; sister, Maureen Spencer Linsey (Dale), Rochester, NY; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Tyler, Gage and Baby Fuller; sisters-in-law, Gloria Anthony Lehmann (Robert), Buffalo,NY; Marsha Anthony Nice (Harold), Olean, NY; brother-in law, Armine Anthony (Jean), St. Johns, Nfld.
A memorial service will be held at St. Joseph the Worker Church, 7405 South Redwood Rd. (1700 West), West Jordan on Tuesday, January 12th at 11 a.m. The Rosary will be said one hour before the service. Funeral Director, Neil O'Donnell and Sons.
