DAVIS COUNTY1. Jan. 30 -- Christina Arcaris, 21, was found dead in her Layton home at 2231 E. 3700 North, the victim of a murder-suicide. Police arrived there after an Ogden woman contacted them to say her son-in-law, Tony Arcaris, called her to say he had shot his wife. Police found Tony Arcaris, 50, also dead of an apparent gunshot wound to the head. The couple's 13-month-old child was sitting in a high chair unharmed. Method: shot. Motive: domestic.
2. Dec. 2 -- The bodies of Violeta Bosen, 43, and Edgar Osorio, 29, were found in Bosen's Woods Cross home after she failed to show up at work at Davis High School, where she was a Spanish teacher. Police say Bosen and Osoiro had lived together for several months, although they speculated he had recently moved out. Police say Osorio shot the family dog, shot Bosen as she was trying to flee out the back door and then turned the gun on himself. Method: shot. Motive: domestic.
DUCHESNE COUNTY
1. Oct. 31 -- The blown-up remains of Rex K. Tanner, 48, and June Flood, 59, were found buried on a hillside 20 miles southwest of Duchesne. The couple's former employer, John R. Pinder, is accused of shooting them and blowing up the bodies with dynamite to conceal the slayings. Prosecutors believe Pinder went to the couple's home Oct. 25 in Strawberry River and drove them to Lake Canyon, where he shot them. Pinder, who keeps a lion named Sinbad as a pet, buried the remains with a tractor, prosecutors allege. He and his father own the JJNP Ranch, where Tanner and Flood used to work. Pinder, 41, is awaiting trial on a barrage of charges in connection to the slayings. He faces two counts of capital murder; aggravated burglary and two counts of aggravated kidnapping, both first-degree felonies; possession of an explosive device and two counts of tampering with evidence, both second degree-felonies; and two counts of desecration of a dead body, a third-degree felony. Filimeno Valencia-Ruiz, 34, an employee of Pinder, is also charged with two counts of capital murder. Prosecutors believe he was with Pinder during the slayings. Prosecutors also charged Pinder's girlfriend, Barbara Dehart, 44, with a felony count of obstruction of justice. She is accused of disposing of evidence that could link Pinder to the slayings. EMERY COUNTY
1. Oct. 29 -- A sniper shot and killed Charles Watterson, 64, as he was grading a dirt road near Green River. A co-worker found Waterson's body with nine gunshot wounds, lying in a ravine. The sniper shot about 25 rounds from a .22 caliber rifle, many hitting Watterson's grader. Police said it appears the Green River man tried to run after the sniper opened fire. He was hit as he tried to flee. His body was left in a ravine near the grader. Scott Joseph Merrill, 29, of Spokane, Wash., was charged with capital murder, aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, and criminal mischief, a second-degree felony. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Feb. 9, 1999. Prosecutors believe Merrill is a trained survivalist who made death threats against a Washington woman and President Clinton. Deputies found a tent and a stash of military rations near the scene of the shooting. Police found Waterson's wallet near the scene of the shooting. His cash had been taken. Method: shot. 1. June 4 -- Elizabeth Bundy-Desiato, 36, and her 11-year-old son, Mark Bundy-Desiato, were shot to death in their Beryl home, located about 40 miles west of Cedar City. Police say Danny Desiato, 38, shot his wife and stepson, set fire to the house and then shot himself. Elishia Bundy-Desiato, a daughter of Elizabeth's, was at the home during the shootings. She called police in Cedar City and said her stepfather had taken a can of gasoline into the home. The 10-year-old girl hid and wasn't hurt in the incident. A friend of Danny Desiato said the couple had seperated and was in the process of getting a divorce. Method: shot. Motive: domestic.

3. July 10 -- Officers found Claudia Benn, 49, dead in her home in the Fiddler's Canyon area. Neighbors called police when they heard gunshots in the house. Benn, a substance abuse counselor for the Piute Tribe, was found lying face down on the floor. Police surrounded the home and saw a man identified as Taberon Dave Honie, 23, leave through a side door, according to police reports. He screamed, "Satan made me do it" and "I'll find you again and kill you," as police took him into custody. He was charged with capital murder and is scheduled for a seven-day trial beginning May 13. Method: shot. Motive: unknown.
TOOELE COUNTY
1. Feb. 20 -- Makiah Craig, 18 months, the daughter of a Marine stationed at Dugway, died from injuries investigators alleged were consistent with shaken-baby syndrome and other physical abuse. The child's stepmother, Terri Lyn Craig, 32, was charged with second-degree murder. Craig pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial in U.S. District Court, which has jurisdiction over crimes on military bases. Method: shaken-baby syndrome. Alleged motive: child abuse.
2. June 26 -- Justin Cash Jones, 23, was beaten to death near the old Girl Scout camp in the eastern part of the county. Three men allegedly beat the Grantsville man with their fists, feet and a flashlight. Dustin Patrick Raymond, 20, Joseph Phillip Roth, 19, and Paul Medina, 19, were charged with murder, a first-degree felony, in connection with the beating. Jones apparently approached the three men and asked for gasoline the night of the slaying. The trio were with a group around a campfire in the woods. The group declined to give Jones gas, so he left. He drove through the area later and someone in the group threw something at Jones' truck. He jumped out and threatened the group with a rock. A melee ensued and Medina is accused of hitting Jones in the head with a flashlight. The other defendants allegedly kicked him in the head. Jones died three days later at University Hospital as a result of severe head injuries. Raymond, Roth and Medina were ordered to stand trial following a preliminary hearing in August. A trial date has not yet been set. Method: beaten. Alleged motive: argument.
UTAH COUNTY
1. Feb. 10 -- Samuela Pulupaki Loseli, 30, was struck in the head while watching TV in his Provo apartment, 615 N. 600 West. Loseli's wife said she was sleeping in the bedroom when it happened but later testified that she ran into the bedroom when his attackers entered their apartment and that they later forced her to help them clean up blood. Loseli's body was found Feb. 11 in a scorched car in Juab County. Police arrested his widow's cousins -- 17-year-old Lipina Lolohea, Orem, and her 15-year-old brother, Siosifa Lolohea. Lipina Lolohea is charged with murder, aggravated arson, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery, all first-degree felonies. Her brother is charged with murder in juvenile court. Investigators allege Lipina went to her uncle's apartment, beat him with a metal construction pipe, dragged him to his car and drove it to Juab County, while her brother drove her car. Prosecutors say she then set the inside of the victim's car on fire while Loseli was still alive. Investigators believe she was seeking revenge for allegedly being raped by Loseli. The victim's wife, however, said her husband had sex with the teenager but contends it was consensual. A Jan. 12 trial date is set for Lipina Lolohea. Method: beaten, set on fire. 2. Feb. 12 -- Orem police found the body of Michael S. Withers, 31, inside the trailer of Laurie L. Paskett at 441 S. State. Investigators say Paskett, 35, and Withers were injecting themselves with heroin that day. When Withers began to overdose, Ortiz attempted to keep Withers conscious by spraying liquid in his face. When the man lost consciousness, Ortiz allegedly hid the body in a sleeping bag in the back bedroom and then went to a friend's house and told him what had happened. The friend contacted police. Orem police investigated the case as a negligent homicide against Paskett, also known as Laurie Ortiz. But the Utah County Attorney's Office declined to prosecute on that offense and instead charged her with abuse or desecration of a body, a third-degree felony. She was sentenced to one year in jail after pleading guilty to a class A misdemeanor charge of desecration of a body. Method: drugs. Motive: negligence, drugs.
3. April 27 -- Tobias "Toby" Black, 22, was shot to death in his Orem apartment, 1274 N. State #4. Rex Black, 48, Orem, called police to say he had shot his son. The dispatcher then heard a single gunshot. Minutes later, police found the bodies of Black and his son. Both had been shot in the head. A chihuahua also died from a gunshot wound. Method: shot. Motive: domestic.
4. May 6 -- Ivette Quirindongo, 32, was found shot to death alongside her husband, Jorge L. Quirindongo, 40, in their apartment at 60 S. 900 East #1, Provo, as part of a murder-suicide. Police say he shot her and then himself. Divorce papers signed earlier in the week were found in the kitchen. The couple's three children, approximate ages 14, 12 and 9, were visiting the home of relatives at the time of the shooting. Method: shot. Motive: domestic.
5. Aug. 4 -- Darcie Jo Baum's unnamed infant was found dead at Old Highland Park near the mouth of American Fork Canyon. Investigators believe Baum gave birth to the baby girl at her Orem apartment in late July or early August and discarded the body. After prosecutors admitted they didn't have enough evidence to charge her with murder because the body was too decomposed, they charged Baum with desecration of a body, a third-degree felony, and possession of marijuana, a class A misdemeanor. Baum pleaded not guilty and will likely go to trial in the spring. Method: negligence. Motive: child abuse.
6. Nov. 15 -- Police found Kirk Openshaw, 39, dead at the bottom of a flight of stairs at his home in Payson, 895 S. 930 West. Officers initially were called to a report of a fall, but witnesses described a fight between Openshaw and two other people. Darren Tuckett, 30, of Santaquin, was charged with homicide by assault, a third-degree felony. Police say alcohol and drugs played a factor in the death. Drug tests indicate Tuckett had been using methamphetamine and marijuana. Method: beaten. Alleged motive: unknown.
7. Dec. 19 -- Ramon Pena, 17, Orem was shot twice in the back of the head with a small caliber handgun in the basement portion of Provo's Club Omni, 153 W. Center St., a popular no-alcohol dance club. Police arrested Edgardo Said Mata, 18, Salem, also known as Antonio Barahona. He is being held in the Utah County Jail on $100,000 bail. No charges have been filed. Police say is it the first ever gang-related slaying in Provo. Method: shot. Alleged motive: gangs.
8. Dec. 29 -- David J. Walker, 25, was shot several times by two police officers at his parents' home, 7656 N. 7200 West, southeast of Lehi, following an hourlong chase. Police say Walker, who had stolen his family's vehicle, called his parents from an Orem gas station and his sister called police and said he was threatening himself and his family. Officers traced the call and began chasing him through Orem, Pleasant Grove, American Fork and Lehi. After driving to his parents' home, he jumped out of the car and officers chased him on foot. During a foot chase, officers said, Walker brought his hands together and they believed he had a gun. He was shot several times by Orem Police Sgt. Harold Peterson and Pleasant Grove police officer John Clayton. Police say he was carrying a knife with a 2-inch blade. Debbie Walker said her son only had a razor blade in his hand because he wanted to kill himself. She said police shot him as he put the razor blade to his wrist, then continuously shot him as he was on the ground. Method: shot. Motive: unknown, possibly self-defense.
WASATCH COUNTY
1. June 27 -- William Joseph "Bill" Miller, 30, was shot once in the head with a .45-caliber handgun at his girlfriend's Heber City home, 675 S. 100 West. Prosecutors say Miller's girlfriend, Jennifer Pederson, saw Jason Todd Westergard, 29, holding a gun. She left the apartment and heard a gunshot. She returned and found Miller shot in the head. Westergard told her Miller had shot himself. But later, Westergard told police the gun had discharged while he and Miller were "wrestling for or with the gun." An autopsy revealed the gun had been fired from as close as 1 inch from Miller's head. At the conclusion of a preliminary hearing, a judge ordered Westergard to stand trial on charges of murder, a first-degree felony, tampering with evidence, a second-degree felony, and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony. A trial date is pending. Method: shot. Motive: argument, alcohol.
WASHINGTON COUNTY
1. Jan. 17 -- The stillborn 8-month female fetus of Dayna Pittman, 38, La Verkin, was determined to have died because of a methamphetamine overdose due to the mother's drug use. The baby was born dead on Jan. 17. She pleaded no contest to child abuse homicide and was sentenced to a year in jail. Method: drugs. Motive: negligence.
WEBER COUNTY
1. Jan. 10 -- Isac Nerio, 38, was found in his apartment at 2684 Adams Ave., Ogden, by the manager. He had been shot in the head and died a few days later. Within a few weeks of the slaying, police had identified a suspect but speculate he may have fled the county. They have not been able to obtain charges against the man because they are unsure if the name is legitimate and they don't know where he is. Police believe the suspect may have been unaware the gun was loaded and began waving it around. A witness told police Nerio warned the suspect to put the gun away before somebody got hurt and then turned to walk away. The suspect started laughing, pointed the gun at the back of Nerio's head and pulled the trigger. Witnesses told police the suspect seemed shocked the weapon was loaded. He immediately dropped the gun and fled. Method: shot. Motive: unknown.
2. Jan. 11 -- Ivan Mareno, 20, of Logan, was shot in the back of the head while riding in a van in Ogden after two groups flashed gang signs in the parking lot of a convenience store. The exchange led to a cat-and-mouse pursuit through the city that ended on Wall Avenue, when Mareno was shot. He died four days later at McKay-Dee Hospital. Enrique Coria Jr., 22, Farr West, was charged in the shooting two weeks later after he was stopped on a routine traffic violation and officers found guns in the car. He was convicted of murder, a first-degree felony, by a jury in October and sentenced to five years to life in prison. Coria also faces a first-degree felony charge of criminal solicitation after allegedly arranging to a have a witness to the homicide killed. He faces a jury trial on that charge Jan. 4. Method: shot. 3. March 23 -- Wayne Hillaker, 19, died in the 800 block of 12th Street in Ogden after his car was sprayed with five .22-caliber bullets. One hit him in the head. The dispute that ended in Hillaker's death began with an argument over a television set that belonged to Hillaker's mother. Montana authorities later arrested Ogden resident Alfredo Arias Gomez, 23. Police said Gomez and Hillaker had been arguing all evening and had been asked to leave an Ogden home and take the fight elsewhere. Authorities allege Gomez wanted the television set as a "tax" for an unresolved drug debt. He was charged with murder, a first-degree felony, pleaded not guilty and a trial has been set for March 8 in 2nd District Court. Method: shot. Alleged motive: drugs.
4. June 23 -- Dwight W. Jones, 18, of Roy, died after he was shot in the chest during a fight on a downtown street in Ogden's business district. Police say the shooting stemmed from a long-running dispute between two groups of young men. Jones was shot after he made a U-turn on 24th Street and blocked Warren Clyde Smith's car. Police say Jones attacked Smith as she was sitting in the driver's seat of the vehicle, and Smith then shot Jones in the chest with a .22-caliber pistol. Smith, 19, of Riverdale, was charged four months later with manslaughter, a second-degree felony. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 29, 1999. Method: shot. 5. June 30 -- Marinos Tolios, 43, was stabbed to death while trying to sell a man cocaine. Tolios got into an argument with Marlon Flores, 29, during a 5 a.m. exchange in the 2300 block of Quincy Avenue in Ogden. The argument escalated when Flores pulled out a gun in front of a roomful of witnesses. Tolios managed to get the gun away from Flores but then was stabbed several times. Flores pleaded guilty to manslaughter and robbery, second-degree felonies, and in December was sentenced up to 15 years in prison. Method: stabbed. Motive: drugs.
6. July 11 -- Bardomiano Vasquez Ruiz, 42, was shot in the heart in the back yard of a home at 2932 Fowler Ave., while at a beer party. Police say Fernando V. Sagaste, 21, attempted to incite a fight but was asked to leave. He later returned to the party with a gun and both Vasquez and Sagaste began shooting at each other. Sagaste was struck three times but recovered from his wounds. He pleaded guilty to second-degree felony manslaughter and has been scheduled for sentencing Jan. 7 in 2nd District Court. Method: shot. Motive: alcohol, argument.
7. Dec. 17 -- Marie Siddoway, 75, was found shot to death in the hallway of her Roy home at 6045 S. 2100 West after worried relatives contacted police. The body of her husband, Calvin Siddoway, 77, was found just a few feet away. He apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he shot his wife twice. The pair were supposed to go the Salt Lake City International Airport to pick up relatives arriving for the holiday season. When they failed to show up, relatives contacted police. Officers found the pair just a little after 3 p.m. Police say they had not been called to the home before on any problems. Method: shot. Motive: domestic.
8. Dec. 21 -- Elijah Carson Fisher, 16 months, of Layton, was struck in the stomach twice, shaken and then thrown to the floor because he would not stop crying. The injuries happened while the toddler was visiting his father, Jason Whittier, at his Ogden home, 1015 N. Gramercy Ave. Whittier called for help when the boy stopped breathing and the victim was rushed to McKay-Dee Hospital. Doctors there said the boy appeared to be suffering from injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome. He was taken to a hospital, where he remained on life support until Christmas Eve. His father has been charged with murder, a first-degree felony. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 5. Method: shaken baby syndrome. Motive: child abuse.
9. Dec. 29 -- Trent Kawakami, 35, was stabbed the evening of Dec. 28 in the abdomen with an 8-inch kitchen knife at 2680 Adams Ave. His girlfriend, Rebecca Mercado, 34, called police at 9:45 p.m. that night and told authorities the boyfriend started pushing her and she stabbed him. She was booked for investigation of murder. Method: stabbed. Motive: domestic.
