Heinz Herrmann Willi Koenig, passed away peacefully at home on January 18, 1999.

He was born January 30, 1923 in Gruenberg, Germany, to Willi Georg and Marie Hedwig Koehler Koenig. He married Irmgard Paula Birth, November 28, 1947. The marriage was solemnized, November 28, 1956 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.Heinz is survived by his wife, Irmgard Paula Birth Koenig; and five children, Elke Koenig Brown, Gerhard Willi Heinz Koenig, Karl-Heinz Friedrich Koenig, Daniela Koenig Woods, Hyrum Fielding Koenig and their spouses; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Heinz loved missionary work and served on several missions including the Salt Lake Valley Regional Mission in 1959, Salt Lake Foreign Mission Presidency, and Salt Lake Central Stake Mission Presidency. Heinz served as the Sunday School president of the University West Stake. He most recently served as the High Priest group leader. Heinz was the last adult to receive the Eagle Scout award. As Scout Master in the German Ward he had 13 boys receive the Eagle Scout Award at one Court of Honor. He later received the Silver Beehive Award for leadership. Heinz loved teaching both youth as well as adults and served in many capacities in his church.

He served as a lieutenant of a tank division in the German army on the Siberian front. He was a prisoner of war in New York and later brought his family to America on April 30, 1956. Heinz was a true Old World Craftsman and was the owner of Heinz Koenig and Sons Painting and Decorating and in 1971 started Koenig Construction Co. He prided himself in his abilities to wood grain and gold-leaf and felt it an honor when he was asked to apply gold leafing in the Salt Lake Temple. In the mid-fifties he painted the interior of the Utah State Capitol Rotunda. Heinz had a love of music. He sang tenor and played numerous instruments. We love you and will sorely miss you.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 23, 1999, 11 a.m., German Ward chapel, 630 E. 100 South. Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Friday evening 6-8 p.m. and again at the church Saturday, one hour prior to the service.

Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
