HUSBAND SHOOTS WIFE, BLASTS NEIGHBOR'S DOOR, DIES IN BLAZE
PEEKSKILL, N.Y. (AP) -- A man shot his estranged wife, blasted his way into a neighbor's home when she fled there, then apparently set it afire and died in the blaze.John Singer said he was reading the Bible on Monday morning when Colleen Simmons pounded on his door, shouting, "Call the police, he's going to kill me!"
His wife let the bleeding woman in, Singer said, "then my front door exploded" when her husband, John Simmons, fired a shotgun blast.
The Singers and the two children who were home fled uninjured, and Colleen Simmons, already critically wounded, also escaped.
IRATE MAN STABS 2 WORKERS OVER HIS MISSING CHECK
DECATUR, Ala. (AP) -- An irate man stabbed two Social Security workers in their office during a dispute over his missing check.
Larry McGee, 31, became angry Monday when told his Social Security check had not arrived because the office thought he was in jail, witnesses said.
"They said they would get it all straightened out," said Daniel Suits, who was in the office. "He told them they were all crazy. He got up and that's when he stabbed the first lady. We all ran out the back door."
Police said McGee used a butcher knife to stab Gayle Bowman in the throat. He then stabbed office manager William Moore in the forehead and hand, police said.
FELLOW DEATH-ROW INMATE STABS DRIFTER TO DEATH
PARCHMAN, Miss. (AP) -- A drifter who falsely claimed he killed dozens of people in 22 states was stabbed to death by a fellow death row inmate at the Mississippi State Penitentiary.
Donald Leroy Evans, sentenced to die for strangling a 10-year-old Gulfport girl, was attacked Monday with a makeshift knife, known in prison parlance as a "shank," while being led to his cell, said Corrections Department spokesman Ken Jones.
"He was stabbed to death by Jimmie Mack, another death row inmate. Mack was being taken by corrections officers to the shower when the stabbing occurred," Jones said.
FLORIDA POLICE CAPTURE MAN LINKED TO GANG VIOLENCE
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Police have captured a man believed to be behind gang violence that led to the killings of 12 people last year, including his girlfriend and cousin.
Anthony "Little Bo" Fail, 25, was arrested early Tuesday at a motel after a SWAT team threw a stun grenade into the room to disorient him.
Investigators say Fail is the common thread in a dozen slayings since August as drug gangs battle for the takeover of the "John Does" -- a gang that controls much of the drug trade in Liberty City, a poor suburb of Miami.
18 NURSES AT BOSTON CENTER CITED FOR CHEMO OVERDOSES
BOSTON (AP) -- Eighteen nurses at a renowned cancer center have been cited for giving chemotherapy overdoses to two patients, one of whom died as a result.
The overdoses both occurred in 1994. At the time the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's policy did not require nurses to double-check doctors' medication orders and verify their accuracy with experimental protocols or treatment plans.
But the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing held Monday that the nurses can be held accountable anyway.
2 IMMIGRANTS ARRESTED, ACCUSED OF KIDNAPPING
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Two Chinese immigrants have been arrested and accused of kidnapping the 17-year-old son of a wealthy developer in an attempt to get $1.5 million in ransom.
Kuan Nan Chen, who was missing for three weeks, was rescued Monday at the home of one of his alleged captors just as his father was paying $500,000 ransom in China.
Chen's legs and arms were chained and his eyes and mouth were covered with duct tape, but he was physically unharmed, according to police.
FBI TAKES FIRST STEP IN PROBING WOMAN'S SHOOTING
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -- The FBI has taken the first step toward an investigation into whether Los Angeles police violated the civil rights of a 19-year-old woman who was shot to death as she sat in her disabled car with a gun.
Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles, said the FBI's task will be to determine whether a full investigation is warranted.
Mrozek's statement came Monday as 300 people marched peacefully on police headquarters to protest the Dec. 28 shooting of Tyisha Miller.
EX-SMOKER TO CONTINUE APPEAL AGAINST CIGARETTE MAKER EX-SMOKER TO KEEP APPEALING AGAINST CIGARETTE MAKER
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- A former smoker who won -- and then lost -- a $750,000 verdict against the nation's third largest cigarette maker says he plans to continue his appeal.
An appeals court in Tallahassee on Dec. 31 denied Grady Carter's motion to rehear its earlier decision voiding his judgment against Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. The ruling was made public Monday.
"It was kind of expected," said Carter, 68. "We are going to take it on to the (Florida) Supreme Court. We're just going to keep plodding along."
