A float featuring a giant portrait of the late chairman Mao Tse-tung, founder of the People's Republic of China, files past Tiananmen Gate during a massive parade to celebrate the national holiday, October 1. More than 500,000 soldiers and civilians dressed in yellow and red surrounded the float and participated in the parade to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Thousands of spectators lined the street for the parade.
